When Radiation Puppy returned to the music scene following a very long hiatus, it was more than attempting to replicate previous accomplishments; it had also been about attempting to reconnect with old friends. It was about merging decades of varied musical experiences into something fresh and electrifying. Fronted by Chris Hamilton, who describes their sound “volatile and abrasive,” the team has pushed the envelope since their 1st release as a Baltimore based quartet in 2005.
Artist’s Story
In 2003, Radiation Puppy released their first album Driving Nowhere, which embodied the early 2000s indie-pop-rock spirit. Guided by Hamilton’s vision, the band found success in hometown music mixing influences from Jimmy Eat World to Ryan Adams. Hamilton adds, “Our sound was described a wide variety of ways, but we needed to make something which felt right to us.”
Through time, people moved on to go after other musical pursuits prior to the band reformed in 2017 to release the Persona Non Grata EP. The break enabled members like Mandy Buttrum and Fuso to branch out into brand new projects and round out their sound upon reformation. This set the foundation for their upcoming album, Tyrant, which Hamilton describes as “grounded but explosive.” The continuing work with drummer Troy Jones and guitarist Tony Nickolas signifies another layer of complexity in the band as it grows over time.
The Song
Radiation Puppy’s newest track “Shy” features drums pulsating with screaming piano and guitar riffs. The song features J. Robbins (of Jawbox & Burning Airlines fame) at the mixing desk, and carries an energy that is rebellious but reflective. It ain’t all about the alternative rock revival; The track has an emotional weight above genres.
The musical journey in “Shy” is complimented by the deep, harmonized vocals of Buttrum and Hamilton which will provide a contrast to the song’s instrumental abrasion. The song expresses emotional vulnerability in a vocal and auditory declaration of identity.
Why It Matters
At its heart, “Shy” explores themes of self discovery and courage being one’s authentic self-a message which resonates these days in a world where identity and authenticity are lauded but challenged. The musical journey of Radiation Puppy echoes this, demonstrating resilience through evolution and reinventing.
Hamilton says “In today’s noise’s soundscape’ Shy’ dares to be different.” This particular ethos is evident in their music and also the band’s history of adaptation and growth. Radiation Puppy returns to be reminder : artistic authenticity and evolution constitute the basis of resonating, timeless music.
